On Monday 5 September 7, 2016, KIVI MAI held an event on Inspection Management at Tatasteel in IJmuiden. It was a pleasant and instructive afternoon during which around 30 people were updated by Ko NIeuwehuijsen and Jaap van Tilborgh on the inspection management process they have developed within Tatasteel.

First, they explained how the improvement cycle of Inspection Management works within Tatasteel and how it fits into the existing maintenance process. It was explained how in the field an inspection or measurement is assessed against predetermined standards and how this leads to a report in SAP in a number of steps. This reporting is ultimately a tool for management to make decisions on where to invest scarce maintenance euros. Basis for the assessment criteria is the NEN 2767.

After theory, there was practice. The group was split into six small groups and each group was given a fruit tray and some inspection forms. It was now up to everyone to assess the fruit against the predetermined criteria. This led to fun and certainly not everyday discussions among the different groups!

After all apples and pears had been compared, it was time for drinks. Here, there was some more talk and discussion and we could conclude that, with thanks to Tatasteel and all participants, it was another successful afternoon.

Description

How can you report on your findings from inspections and condition measurements in a standard way?
How do you ensure that the importance of the advised action is also clear to non-specialists?
How do you ensure that the results of different inspections on different installations can be compared?

These and other questions motivated Jaap van Tilborgh and Ko Nieuwenhuijse of Tata Steel in IJmuiden to look for a standard inspection and standard reporting method. In addition, they also wanted the reporting to tie in with the SAP system in a way that greatly simplified the management of maintenance work.
For the inspection method and setting up the reporting method, they used the NEN2767, which was mainly used in construction and infra. How this method works and how it is applied within Tata Steel will be explained by both gentlemen on 5 September. The meeting has an interactive character, participants are invited to test the method.
