KIVINIRIA STARTS PROFESSIONAL DEPARTMENT "MAINTENANCE"!
KIVINIRIA has added a specialist department: 'Maintenance'. The board of this newly established department, consisting of one woman and seven men, has set the following objective: "Making people (re)recognise the role of maintenance in all phases of an asset's life cycle".
There's a lot of English in this, but that's because the traditional Dutch words, maintenance, life cycle and asset, make it too easy for people to fall into the still compartmentalised way of thinking. This is what the department aims to counter with its creation.
The department's first activity brought 70 interested people to Tata Steel IJmuiden. After the kick-off by the department chairwoman, various speakers explained the improvements realised and in the pipeline in the group's operations from their own perspectives. These included the integral role of maintenance in asset management and manufacturing throughout the asset life-cycle.
People talked about how knowledge and innovative developments regarding maintenance in all phases (design, construction, use, modification and demolition) of an asset can greatly reduce the Total Cost of Ownership. This would allow TATA Steel to significantly strengthen its competitive position in the Netherlands.
After listening to these innovative speakers, the group continued by bus with a tour of the vast (750-hectare) company premises and made a stop at the hot strip mill. In this spectacular hot strip mill, red-hot slabs of steel are rolled out and turned into coils before being shipped to customers. At the end of this visit and tour, the first meeting of this young department concluded with a snack and a drink which provided an opportunity for discussion.
The atmosphere was enthusiastic and engaged and a common comment was that it is indeed high time, that we all engage in a more holistic approach to managing our production assets.
Description
KIVI NIRIA's latest professional department is called 'Maintenance'. The department's aim is: "To get people to (re)recognise the role of maintenance in all phases of an asset's life cycle".
On 24 September, between 14:30 and 19:00, the KIVI NIRIA Maintenance Department will hold its first meeting. It will take place at Tata Steel in IJmuiden. This first meeting will have an extra festive touch, as the department will then be officially 'installed'.
Tata Steel, formerly Hoogovens, is one of the few places in the Netherlands with a genuine manufacturing industry still in place. At the IJmuiden site, steel has been made from ore and recycled metal, through coal, for almost 100 years.
The end product is slabs or coils of steel that are sold to customers around the world. To make this steel, Tata Steel has a lot of plants and installations, which require maintenance.
How do you organise that? And how do you know you are doing the right thing? That is the technical subject of this meeting.
During this meeting, maintenance at Tata Steel will be approached from different angles, also, of course, the specific role of the engineer within modern maintenance will be discussed. This will be followed by a tour of the hot strip mill where slabs of around 20 tonnes of steel are rolled out into coils of steel. After the tour, there will be drinks to catch up.
Registration is open to all and can be done via this link. The number of places is limited so be quick
