Description

( THE ADMISSION TIME IS NOT DEFINITIVE yet !)

De-poldering Noordwaard is one of more than 30 measures of the Room for the River programme. This national programme protects the Dutch river area from high water and - where possible - makes it more beautiful and attractive. In the lower river area, river water is held back by the sea. To prevent flooding, more water must be allowed to flow to the sea. At extremely high water levels, a large water level reduction is needed at Gorinchem. This is where the Noordwaard comes in handy.

Objective:
- substantial water level decrease of 30 cm at Gorinchem;
- improvement of spatial Noordwaard.

Starting points:
- current residents must be able to continue living in the area;
- offer prospects to farmers (inside or outside Noordwaard).

How will this be solved?
This will be solved by de-poldering Noordwaard. The polder dyke will be placed further inland on the river side. By partially excavating dykes, inflow and outflow openings will be created for the flow-through area. The Noordwaard is then de-poldered and the river can flow into the area at high tide. Including the outer dike area, Noordwaard has an area of 4450 hectares. In times of high water, the meadows of the Noordwaard become 'flowable'. Water is diverted from the Nieuwe Merwede at Fort Steurgat and is diverted to the sea as far west as possible. The water level reduction achieved by the de-poldering of Noordwaard will work its way up to the Upper Merwede at Gorinchem.
