It can also be different
Description
In the activities surrounding the lustrum of The Society "Practical Study", a symposium cannot be missing. The symposium committee 2014 is therefore honoured to organise an, this year, extra-large event on 25 February 2014. The theme is: It can be done differently.
The aim of the symposium is therefore to stimulate thinking differently, or rather outside-the-box thinking. Civil Engineering students are being prepared for the civil engineering world, and the practices used in it. However, it is quite possible, and even likely, that outside that "civil box", other ideas live and develop that seem unrealistic now, but offer great prospects in the future. We therefore want to achieve that these other ideas are encouraged.
The outside-the-box ideas can be found in fields other than civil engineering, such as three-dimensional (3D) printing, sustainable recycling methods and the possibilities of digital storage on nano-chips. These concepts can also be applied to the civil sector. Examples include 3D printing of buildings, legolisation (free after Prof de Ridder), multiple use of space and building on or under water. The civil engineering potential of these other ideas is enormous.
Does the current state of affairs suffice to exploit these possibilities, or should we think differently? This question is at the heart of the kick-off to a great, but above all, an informative and innovative symposium. Because things can also be done differently, we are also approaching the usual elements of a civil symposium in a different way: with a different appropriate venue, with different distinguished speakers and with a totally different case study
