Sluiskil tunnel under construction
Description
On Tuesday 16 July next, KIVI NIRIA's Tunnel Engineering and Underground Works Division (TTOW) and Construction and Hydraulic Engineering Division will organise an excursion to the Sluiskil tunnel under construction. The Sluiskil tunnel under the canal from Terneuzen to Ghent, is a bored tunnel, currently under construction as an extension of the Westerscheldetunnel. The tunnel consists of two tubes with an internal diameter of 10.50 m.
This project also includes two deep tunnels, in which the starting and receiving shafts are located, approx. 6 km of highway with a trio of viaducts, the entire VTTI installations of both the tunnel and the roads, the buildings on the West and East banks and the architectural design of the entire area.
The D/C project started in 2010 and is expected to be completed in mid-2015.
The timing of this excursion has been chosen so that all parts can be seen. The ramp is partly completed. The first tube has been drilled and the Tunnel Drilling Machine is now being prepared in the tarmac for the second tube. This can now be seen in its full glory. The first part of the road plan has now been opened up.
A field trip involving both departments is rare. Perhaps this could improve some mutual contacts. Highly recommended!
