Spoorzone Tilburg
Description
The Spoorzone in Tilburg is an area about 3 km long with an area of 75 hectares and is located in the centre of Tilburg. This area includes the Central Station and a number of old industrial buildings (former NS/Nedtrain buildings), which together form the basis for the development of the Spoorzone. With the Spoorzone, Tilburg wants to take an important step in strengthening its city centre in the areas of education, creative industry, art and culture, events and housing.
Every day, 30,000 travellers use Tilburg Station. That will be over 40,000 by 2020. To improve accessibility and circulation, the station will get a new, wide passage. This will connect the future Spoorzone district with the city centre south of the station. The new passage at Tilburg station will be almost 42 metres wide. This includes space for shops and amenities, which will all be included in the passage.
At the level of Willem II Street, about 300 metres next to the station, there will be a bicycle and pedestrian tunnel under the tracks. The passage will be 13 metres wide and 3 metres high.
Construction started in autumn 2013. The project will be completed by mid-2016
We are being offered the opportunity by the construction company Besix to learn about the construction of the tunnels. The programme consists of a number of lectures by the municipality of Tilburg, Prorail and Besix. Afterwards, we will visit the construction site. The tunnel sections will then be ready to be pressed (largest pressing in the Netherlands) and pushed (in 2 parts) in mid-October.
