On Wednesday 2 October, the Dike Monitoring Network is organising a workshop on Soil Structure Formation at Dikes. Its measurability, predictability and influenceability will be the focus.

The programme is as follows:

14:00 - Opening and introduction: Martin van der Meer/ Wouter Zomer

Wouter Zomer and Martin van der Meer open the afternoon with an introduction to today's theme: structure formation in dykes. They discuss the developments underway that will only make structure formation on dykes more important in the coming years.

14:20 - Structure formation: Martine van der ploeg/ Marc Hijma

Martine is doing research on structure formation at Wageningen University. She takes us through the drafting of research on soil cracks, among other things. How do you actually measure structure formation? Different measurement techniques and types of structure formation are discussed to get an insight into what we are dealing with. As a topic for discussion, what practical experience already exists and whether we can learn from it.

15:00 - 15:20 Break

15:20 - Calculating dykes with structure formation: Werner Halter

Measuring and observing structure formation is one thing, but what happens next with this information is just as important. What are the risks that arise when cracks are present in a dike? How does this affect failure mechanisms? How is this taken into account in the strength calculations of dikes? All questions Werner deals with and explains in his presentation.

15:50 - Broad Green Dike: Marco Veendorp/Henk van Norel

The Broad Green Dike is a well-known project of Waterschap Hunze en Aa's. Marco and Henk give insight into how the design of the dyke was set up and which measurement strategies were applied here. With full grass cover and different types of clay in the overburden, challenges such as clay compaction and water safety play a major role. Monitoring structure formation is an important part of the studies conducted on the dike.

16:20 - Discussion/case/to work

17:00 - End

KIVI members are cordially invited to attend this workshop.
