Description

General
Waterschap Brabantse Delta prevents flooding, pollution, desiccation and extinction in West Brabant by ensuring strong, safe dikes and quays, treating sewage water, regulating water levels and protecting nature.

Existing sewage treatment plant RWZI Nieuwveer
The Nieuwveer sewage treatment plant, built in 1973, treats the waste water from Breda and surrounding urban areas. Through fine grids, sand traps and bacteria, contaminants are removed from the wastewater. Removed sand is reused for road construction.

Since 1973, sewage sludge water has been thickened using the so-called Zimpro process. As part of the treatment process, about 3,500 m³ of sludge water is pressed into about 24 m³ of relatively dry sludge cakes every day.
The Zimpro plant is an effective process, which in itself thickens excellently, but requires a lot of attention from staff and which also consumes a lot of energy (electricity and oil).

Detailed information
m3 treated wastewater per year: 30,000,000 m3

Construction of new sludge processing RWZI Nieuwveer started
In July 2009, the general board of the water board took the decision for new construction with sludge fermentation and sludge dewatering. The plant should be handed over ready for operation in February 2012.
Wednesday 17 November 2010 the first pile was driven for the new sludge treatment plant.
Max. treatment capacity new WWTP 16,500 m3/hour The new automated plant will make huge savings on the costs of energy, operation and maintenance by taking energy out of the sludge treatment process. The new Nieuwveer sludge processing plant includes storage tanks, a screenings building, a sludge processing and sludge heating building, a 25-metre-high sludge digestion tank, a biogas holder, and engines that convert biogas into electricity and heat.

From energy-guzzling to automated, low-maintenance energy-producing Waterschap Brabantse Delta - New construction RWZI purification plant Nieuwveer Breda.
Anyone who wants to see with their own eyes how innovations in sewage treatment have been applied in a unique almost-completed new building at the Breda-Nieuwveer location (completion February 2012) should not miss this presentation with guided tour.
In the new building, using the latest techniques, sewage sludge is thickened and converted into transportable sludge mud (new: including energy generation from biogas) that will later be incinerated in the SNB Sludge Combustion Noord-Brabant in Moerdijk.
