Description

How can we bring the manufacturing industry back to the Netherlands?
Government policy is committed to more employment, more jobs. Within our free market, the cost price usually determines success. Shifting production to cheap countries remains an option, even if this leads to a weakening of GDP. Often, the entrepreneur is left with no choice. Thus, additional Dutch jobs require more besides entrepreneurship.
The aim of this symposium is to determine how to facilitate the recovery of the manufacturing industry and how to stop the outflow. Professional association KIVI (Royal Institute of Engineers) hopes this will provide building blocks for government policy.

One swallow does not make a summer...
Interest in moving the manufacturing industry to low-wage countries is declining slightly. The industry now leaving the Netherlands is becoming higher-value and the technical capability of low-wage countries is increasing. Recently, there has been a modest return of manufacturing to the Netherlands. 3D printer technology will also have its impact. But one swallow does not make a summer!

Be careful with our industry
In the Netherlands, mercantilism often wins out over entrepreneurship and national pride. Entrepreneurs with promising products are quickly overtaken by copies from low-wage countries. A decline in our manufacturing industry undermines our innovative capacity, our knowledge economy.
We need to take care of the carriers of our national supply and manufacturing industry, such as the legacy of the Philips family, the food production and food processing industry, the wet contracting industry, logistics with its (air) port and transport activities, the oil and gas industry.
In the USA, Reshoring has become an established concept. It mainly concerns products whose cost price is highly dependent on the (low) energy price. The Netherlands is still at a standstill in this respect
