Description

The new city hall for Nieuwegein municipality will be the home of and for everyone in the city. The building will be located at a central spot in the new city centre. The unusual architecture by Danish bureau 3xNielsen not only invites you to admire the building from the outside, but also to come inside. Transparency, light and space characterise the special design of this city hall. The abundance of glass ensures a pleasant and playful incidence of daylight. From both inside and outside, it is easy to see what is going on in the building. Because the building has no rear side, it connects nicely with the surrounding squares on all sides.

It is not only the location and the design that make the City Hall special, but also the fact that so many different organisations come together in the City Hall. The municipality, the central library, the Visual Arts Centre, the Welfare Foundation Nieuwegein, the World Shop, the UVW Werkbedrijf and commercial shops are all housed here.

Other special features of the project include:
- The atrium with its twisting floor fields;
- The council chamber, with its elliptical shape, in the centre of the building;
- The restaurant façade at the location of the roof terrace;
- The 2nd skin façade with screen-printed glass.
