Description

Utrecht University is building a new Faculty of Science. The completion of the new home for the students and staff of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Inorganic Chemistry and Chemical Biology research groups of Chemistry is expected in October 2010.
Among others, the new faculty will replace the F.A.F.C. Went building, also known as 'the Ponskaart' on the Uithof.

The building consists of teaching spaces, laboratories and flexible workspaces where students and researchers will meet. Commissioned by the university, the new faculty was designed by Architectuurstudio HH (Herman Herzberger). Pieters Bouwtechniek is responsible for the structural design. Both architect Laurens Jan ten Kate and structural engineer Jaap Dijks will present the architectural design as well as the supporting structure during this afternoon.

Characteristic of the structural design is the simplicity of the standard floors combined with the complexity of the building's entrance.
In the area of the entrance, a five-storey building volume of 30 by 60m stands on only two small legs of 6 by 7m. Various structural systems have been used to make this possible; storey-high steel trusses, storey-high concrete wall beams, prestressed concrete.

Construction has now progressed to the point where the load-bearing structure is still clearly visible and a good impression of the scale and shape of the building can also be gained. Completion will take place in 2010


Depending on the number of visitors, the group will be split up into several groups. The tours will then take place simultaneously, each starting from a different point.

After coffee/tea, the group will proceed to the faculty lecture hall, accompanied by Mr Fred Schreuders, branch director of Pieters Bouwtechniek and also project director of the project to be visited.

After his welcome speech, Mr ten Kate, associate of Mr Herzberger, will act as the first guest speaker. He will briefly explain the architectural design.

Afterwards, Mr Dijks will address the guests and give a short presentation on the structural part of the project.

After the tour, with an opportunity to take a closer look at the construction, Mr Schreuders will conclude the afternoon with an aperitif
