Project OV-Terminal Arnhem
Description
OV-Terminal Arnhem
One of the most challenging and complex construction projects currently under construction in the Netherlands is undoubtedly the OV-Terminal Arnhem.
Arnhem Centraal is one of the most important hubs of the Dutch railway network. Almost 1 million passengers use this hub every day, and this number is only expected to increase. In order to transfer quickly and comfortably to other means of transport, these have been brought together under one roof: a car park, train station, bus station and a bicycle shed. Together, they form the OV-Terminal. UN Studio translated the different traffic flows into a flowing design, in which travellers can get their bearings and feel socially safe.
For a long time, it seemed that this unusual design could not be realised within the available budget. By offering an alternative in steel to the concrete-designed undulating roof of the Public Transport Terminal, the consortium succeeded in making the design both feasible and financially viable.
In early 2014, construction of phase 2 (OV-Terminal) began on the underground car park (phase 1), which had been completed years earlier. Currently, the steel sections (150 pieces) produced by 'shipbuilder' CIG are being assembled into a shell roof with a free span of 40 by 60 metres. An excellent time to visit the construction site.
The two themes of the excursion were the structural elaboration of the shell roof with its complexly curved supports and the risk management of the execution process.
The new public transport terminal should open to passengers by the end of 2015.
