On 1 March, the State Secretary of Defence presented the plan for the replacement of the LC frigates to the House of Representatives. In a few months, the House of Representatives will decide whether this project can be launched.
The Defence and Security Department's Politics and Technology Working Group analyses current political developments in the defence sector. It provides independent facts and interpretation from the technological knowledge and experience of engineers. The working group has comments and suggested questions on the DMP-A for the replacement of the Air Defence and Command Frigates (LCF), which State Secretary Christophe van der Maat presented to the House of Representatives on 1 March 2024.
Based on the DMP-A, the plans for the new LC frigates seem well designed, with a clear eye on the needs of the Royal Navy. The planned intensive cooperation with the knowledge institutes and industry gives confidence in this that the development and construction will not look at "proven" systems, but at the technology of the future, which will be available in 10 years' time.
The working group therefore expects that it can become a highly innovative class of ship, but the DMP-A does not exude this.
Partly for this reason, the working group does still have a dozen comments and questions.
