Three student awards were presented at the KNCV Awards Gala
At the beginning of October, the fourth edition of the Avond van de Chemie took place in theatre Odeon in Zwolle. With that evening, the Royal Dutch Chemical Society (KNCV) brings chemistry to the theatre, where both new developments and surprising facts are discussed.
Speakers
Speakers of the evening were Marleen Kamperman (University of Groningen), Tom van Aken (CEO at Avantium) and Ewine van Dischoeck (Leiden University).
Marleen Kamperman gets inspiration for innovative materials from nature, such as insects or underwater animals. She is working on underwater glue, such as the velvet worm that sprays a special substance at its prey to secure them.
Tom van Aken is working hard on more sustainable chemistry with his company Avantium. Many plastic containers, for example, can be produced in a greener way. Produce more sustainable, functional and biodegradable plastic. He sees PEF as the material of the future.
Ewine van Dishoeck studies chemistry through telescopes. More than two hundred different molecules have already been discovered in the space between the stars.
Prize gala
Three student prizes were also awarded, during the KNCV Prize gala.
Graduates from three different levels won prizes. Meike Heideman won the Golden Flame (mbo), Werner Tabak went home with the Golden Spatula (hbo) and Indy du Fossé is winner of the Golden Master Award (wo). Each wins a cash prize of €1000.
Next year
In 2020, the Evening of Chemistry will have its first anniversary. Then the KNCV will celebrate it at the Parktheater in Eindhoven on 8 October 2020. The evening is open to everyone.
