The very first edition of the EMVT Knowledge Day organised by the EMVT Association attracted many interested visitors. The event was held digitally on Thursday, 5 November 2020. The day revolved around the theme: Electric transport, Electricity versus hydrogen as an energy carrier.

With climate change and the associated climate change targets set by the EU, major changes are needed in energy industrial processes worldwide.

We therefore need to look at sustainable solutions, including in transport. Promising substitute options are electricity and hydrogen. However, we encounter several challenges during this transformation process. During the EMVT Knowledge Day, these challenges were addressed.

Pavol

For instance, the lecture by Pavol Bauer of TU Delft was well attended. Pavol explained why the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles is the 'key factor' to make a smooth transition to E-mobility and energy transition.

Visitors were also treated to a number of other interesting lectures. For instance, Maarten Berende of Enexis told about an Enexis study in which they spent a year remotely controlling home charging points of 140 households. In his presentation, he answered the question: 'Would it be possible to simultaneously relieve the grid and still provide a full battery to everyone?'

Peter Vaessen from KEMA Labs gave insight during his presentation on how component and system testing can be used to keep our future sustainable electricity supply reliable and affordable.

Nils van der Blij from TU Delft spoke about the importance and challenges of energy conversions and energy distribution networks for electrochemical systems.

TU Delft - Nils klein

He spoke about the feasibility of using hydrogen as a replacement for fossil fuel and battery storage technologies for various applications such as mobility and seasonal energy storage.

In the Netherlands, the number of electric vehicles and charging stations is increasing rapidly every year. The introduction of EVs will (in time) bring considerable peak loads. During his presentation, Arjan Wargers of ElaadNL talked about a study held at ElaadNL on the phenomena created by these peak loads.

AcalBfi klein

Robert Ermers of Acal BFi closed the day where during his presentation he talked about a system design to design power conversion that includes all the necessary functions for effective charge management for both capacity and expertise.

He showed during his presentation how to create a unique design to meet the growing needs of the industry.

The very first edition of the EMVT Knowledge Day attracted 352 unique visitors. The visitors watched 6 webinars in one day. The available replays and slides can be viewed via the website of the EMFT association.

EMVT Knowledge Day event 2020

On Thursday 5 November 2020, the EMVT Knowledge Day will take place for the first time. Due to corona measures, this event will be held in digital format.

On this day, visitors will be updated on current topics through technical and interactive webinars by the exhibitors and plenary speakers.

During the EMVT knowledge day, applicators and developers in the field of power electronics and electromagnetism share their knowledge with fellow professionals and end users.

EMFT = ElectroMagnetic Fields Specified in Space and Time

What can you expect during the webinar sessions of the EMVT Knowledge Day 2020?

Knowledge will be shared regarding the topic:

Electric transport, electricity versus hydrogen as an energy carrier.

Register now for free participation in the EMMT Knowledge Day 2020

During the Knowledge Day, you will be informed about the latest developments, solutions and challenges.

The exhibitors and plenary speakers will use polls and call-to-actions in addition to giving a presentation to make the sessions interactive and more personal.

The chat will give you the opportunity to ask your questions and generate a contact moment with the speaker.

14.30 hours Power quality challenges of electric transport

In the Netherlands, every year the number of electric vehicles and charging stations increases rapidly, however, the introduction of EVs (in time) brings with it considerable peak loads and other phenomena that need to be investigated.

Elaad klein

A battery needs direct current (DC) to charge. In the inverter, alternating current (AC) is converted to direct current. In 'normal charging' the conversion takes place in the EV, in fast charging (DC) this conversion takes place in the charging station.

Also, existing standards do not cover the full range of possible disturbances. For example, there are no standards for so-called 'supraharmonics', distortions with a frequency above the 'regular harmonics'.

These disturbances can lead to additional heat generation, capacity reduction of the grid, charging problems and shortened life of electronic equipment.

Arjan Wargers of ElaadNL will discuss ElaadNL's research into these phenomena during his presentation at 14:30. Click here for the full programme overview.

13.45 Sustainable Fuels: Energy Conversions and Systems

Globally, major changes are needed in most energy-intensive industrial processes to meet the European Union's climate change targets.

Electrification of these processes combined with renewable energy sources offers an obvious solution.

However, electrification is limited by available infrastructure. Moreover, chemicals cannot be replaced by an electric alternative in every process, and the storage and transport of chemicals is still more efficient than their electric counterpart.

Currently, the most promising renewable fuel is hydrogen produced from solar or wind energy.

Nils van der Blij from TUDelft will explain the importance and challenges of energy conversions and energy distribution networks for these electrochemical systems during his presentation at 13:45.

It will also explore the feasibility of using hydrogen as a replacement for fossil fuel and battery storage technologies for various applications such as mobility and seasonal energy storage

10.00 Reducing "time to market" for EV Charging

The heart of the EV charging system is power conversion. But what capacity and expertise is available to design the power conversion?

For both capacity and expertise, a system design that includes all the necessary functions for effective charge management.

AcalBfi klein

Robert Ermers of Acal BFi will show you two board- or system-integration-level routes that meet the growing needs of the industry during his presentation at 10.00 am.
