MCP Seminar (3) High efficiency motors
Description
The Motor Challenge Programme (MCP) is a worldwide programme to achieve energy savings through the application of more efficient electric motors, which involves the entire system, i.e. not only the motor, but also, for example, the drive system it controls.
Global research has shown that 10% energy savings could be achieved at a global level if the Motor Challenge Programme were applied.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs sees participation in the MCP as one of the means to achieve the energy target of the B.V. Nederland. For companies, the MCP supports the objectives of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). It proves to be an excellent tool for achieving energy efficiency improvements and thereby also reducing operating costs.
Schiphol Group has embraced the objective within the framework of the Energy Strategy 2020 climate objectives and Multi-Year Agreements (MJA) for energy efficiency and the climate objectives.
In practice, the following feasibility studies into the application of energy-efficient motors and controls have been launched at Schiphol Airport:
1. improving the efficiency of electric motors in baggage systems, applying high-efficiency motors air-conditioning systems (AHU), pumps in hydraulic systems, fans, lifts, hydrophors, moving walkways, etc.
2. Applying fast charging with electric energy storage in an efficient method, which is suitable for traction in aircraft handling process, cargo sheds, among others. Short-time charging significantly increases the operating time of equipment.
The advantages and disadvantages, which are attached to applying it in practice:
Advantages:
- Insight into the energy efficiency of the applied systems
- Improving energy efficiency with the additional result of lower maintenance costs
- Reducing energy costs (EU expectation is 10% on total costs)
- Reducing NOx and CO2 emissions
- Image benefits (conveys that energy saving is important)
- Updating programme of requirements for new construction and modifications
- Communicating corporate responsibility
Disadvantages:
- time required for feasibility studies, pilots, payback time calculations, adjustments to PVEs
- implementation, organisation
- investments with slightly longer payback time.
During the seminar, practical examples will address:
- analysing the situation to arrive at efficiency improvement proposals,
- the high-efficiency motors with their control in practice and
- the method and benefits of Fast Battery Charging with a new technology.
Applying the MCP principle has a sustainable character and also contributes to improving reliability of process assets and systems of transshipment / business processes.
The MCP was initiated in 1993 for industry in the USA.
