Description

Pulsed Power Plasma Technology, from research to applications
A first KIVI NIRIA meeting on Pulsed Power was held in 2005. This fascinating meeting consisted of explaining Pulsed Power and its applications, combined with lab demonstrations. Now eight years later, it appears that the research and transition to applications of Pulsed Power Plasma technology (PPPT) has made great progress, especially through intensive cooperation with other companies and institutions. The department works mainly on power electronics and test set-ups.
Important applications:
- Air cleaning. Here, the PPPT group works together with the engineering firm Oranjewoud to industrialise the application of PPPT for large-scale air purification. For example, the plan is to purify the air from polluting autogas emissions, especially NOx , in this way in the upcoming tunnelling of the A2 motorway in Maastricht. It is estimated that about 300kW is needed for this, significantly less than alternative methods such as ventilation.
- A second application of PPPT is the conversion of natural gas to (liquid) Methanol (CH3OH). This involves catalytic surface plasma conversion.
- The third application is medical. PPPT has been found to significantly accelerate biological cell growth. This is used in the growth of skin cells to grow up faster in severe injuries (skin burns.

Please note that there is a maximum participant number of 40 for this activity.
