The topic, provided by the DC Voltage Foundation, is this time the DC-OVL-XXL project which deals with the large-scale application of DC in public lighting networks. We talk to Wilfred Akerboom, senior product manager at CityTec and Bart van der Vegte, sustainable city and area development consultant.

The aim of the project is to carry out three large-scale demonstrations (one existing situation and one new-build situation and one location with special infrastructure facilities), in which DC technology for public lighting is used:

1. the feasibility of DC application in large-scale OVL projects will be demonstrated
2. the structural sustainability potential will be made visible
3. the financial-economic feasibility will be demonstrated
4. the further potential of other applications of DC in outdoor areas will be mapped

If feasible, significant savings can be made on the raw material copper during construction and on energy during operation. In addition, the street lighting infrastructure could potentially also be used to power other street furniture, pv and batteries to integrate renewable generation and/or to charge electric vehicles.

The interviewers will ask Wilfred about the status of the project, what has been achieved, what has not yet been achieved and most importantly, what has been learned. Bart will share his experiences in convincing owners of OVL grids, such as municipalities, provinces and Rijkswaterstaat.
