Description

Alleviating the unbearable heaviness of man
A new role for the engineer?

Prior to this, from 19.00 - 19.30 hrs, the Annual General Meeting of Members will also take place, to which interested TME members are of course also welcome. See also the agenda below.

The meeting will be introduced by Prof Josee van Eijndhoven, professor of Sustainable Management at the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (DRIFT) at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Sustainability is high on all political agendas, especially in connection with climate change. It is clear that the course must be shifted so as not to run rock hard into the limits of global resources. Technically, it is possible. But will it happen, and in time to avoid catastrophes?

It will only succeed if we turn sustainability into a mission for all people: citizens, politicians and engineers collectively. It also means giving engineers a different role: contributing to social change. Only then can the unbearable weight of man be sufficiently alleviated.

The lecture will address the fact that simple deployment of new technology is not enough, but that radical social and system changes (transitions) are needed. This will be illustrated using the example of water.

In the discussion, the above conclusion can be further focused on the possible new roles of the engineer.

We would be delighted to welcome you to this evening. The walk-in is from 19.30 hrs.
