Aqueduct Middelburg
Description
To increase safety and improve traffic flow, the current N57 on Walcheren is currently being redesigned. An important part of this involves the construction of an aqueduct in the canal through Walcheren. This is to eliminate the bottleneck at Middelburg.
The aqueduct should ensure that, apart from a better flow, road and waterway users can cross each other without waiting times. This is now quite often the case in the summer months.
Special features of the aqueduct include the fact that it cuts through three polders. This requires special attention to flood defences around the approaches and the road and railway crossing over them.
You will be welcomed at the information centre located near the aqueduct construction site on the south side of the canal. There, Rijkswaterstaat will explain the entire project concerning the reconstruction of the N57 on Walcheren.
In addition, the contractor, combination Strukton-Rasenberg, will explain the chosen design of the aqueduct. There will also be extensive coverage of the specific aspects involved in the implementation of this project.
Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to visit the construction site, where you will be able to see both the approach to the aqueduct under construction and the tunnel element that is to be sunk. It will be sunk into the canal around summer 2009 using a special procedure
