To measure is to know. And this is certainly true in geotechnics: without reliable data on the subsurface and structures, it is difficult to make informed design choices. The Measuring and Knowing session offers insight into innovative measuring methods, sensor technology and data analysis, which help us to better understand and use the subsurface.

Agnes Van Uitert (ProRail)
Agnes has been a system specialist in geotechnical engineering at ProRail since 2020 and is involved in policy, projects and innovations in the field of subsurface and track bodies. After studying Engineering Geology, she worked at Arcadis on a variety of geotechnical projects and vibration forecasting for track and construction vibration.

Along the track there are fibre-optic cables that can be used for geotechnical monitoring thanks to new readout techniques. ProRail has been investigating for several years how these cables can help measure deformations and map the subsurface. During the presentation, Agnes will share the results and insights of this promising innovation.

Nathan de Baat (Sweco)
Nathan is a geotechnical consultant at Sweco and has been involved in several projects since graduating from TU Delft in 2021, including the National Network Analysis for ProRail. He also plays an important role in automating and digitising geotechnical calculations within Sweco.

In this presentation, Nathan explains how the load-bearing capacity and deformation behaviour of a waste storage facility were determined during the construction of a circular building on top of the closed landfill site Skinkeskรขns in Leeuwarden. Through clever use of measurements, a safe and sustainable foundation design was achieved without conventional soil testing.

These presentations will be given in Dutch. More information about the programme and registration: https://kivi.nl/communities/vakafdelingen/geotechniek/geotechniekdag/geotechniekdag-2025
