The development and harmonisation of standards and guidelines is an ongoing hot topic in geotechnical engineering. New knowledge, digitalisation and international harmonisation ensure continuous changes in the way we design and test.
Rodriaan Spruit (Municipality of Rotterdam)
Rodriaan is a geotechnical specialist at the Municipality of Rotterdam and chairman of the committee working on the revision of the Sheet Piling Manual (CUR166). He has extensive experience in projects ranging from quay walls to tunnels, and holds a PhD from TU Delft in geotechnical measurements and design.

After six previous editions, a completely updated version of the Manual for Sheet Piling will be published in 2025. The update is in line with the new Eurocode, pays more attention to hydrology, manufacturability and environmental factors, and is being published as a digital handbook for the first time. Rodriaan discusses the main innovations and the underlying design philosophy.
Jan van Dalen (DaeD Ingenieurs)
Jan is a director at DaeD Ingenieurs, chairman of the Norm Committee Geotechnical Engineering and Dutch representative on the international Eurocode 7 committee. Since graduating from TU Delft in 1989, he has worked on a wide range of geotechnical and underground projects and actively contributes to the development of national and international standards.
