The plan is to organise a 7-day study trip to the Basque Country in 2024
As many of you know, in addition to monthly fascinating lectures, our section, together with the association Histechnica, also organises an annual study trip, alternately a domestic (usually 2-day) and a foreign trip (5 to 7-day). These trips are always characterised by special monuments of industrial archaeology and technology where attention can also be paid to interesting cultural aspects of the region. We can rejoice in much interest in these trips partly because of the good atmosphere.
The plan is to organise a 7-day study trip to the Basque Country in 2024. Our travel commissioner is busy making preparations and expects to circulate a convocation with registration form by next January.
The trip
The trip starts and ends in Bilbao the industrial centre and capital of the Basque Country.
Mainly due to the presence of raw materials locally, industrial activity developed relatively early in the 19th century in the Basque Country and also in the neighbouring part of northern Spain,
A European Congress of Industrial Heritage will be held in Bilbao in November. Our travel commissioner will attend this and expects to make some useful contacts there. This is also the reason why the final programme cannot be determined until later than usual.
There are a number of interesting locations in sight. In any case, the Puente Colgante, the world-famous floating bridge in Bilbao (Unesco world heritage site) will be visited in detail. The neighbouring region of Cantabria with Santander will also be visited. Accommodation will be in 2 or 3 hotels.
When
The start date will be on or around 29 May next. If you are interested in joining us, please bear this in mind in your diary.
Costs can only be determined later. Among other things, for hotel reservations it is important to have an idea of the expected number of participants. Therefore, it would be greatly appreciated if you report your serious intention to join the trip, with or without a partner, no later than 10 November. This of course without any obligation. To do so, send an e-mail to our travel commissioner, Ton Boele(tboele@box.nl).
