®60: Everything cuts both ways...
Description
Maarten Kamphuis (founder of MBlades) became the Best Graduating Student at TU Delft in 2011 with his design for a safer racing sword. 'When I started this assignment at the IO faculty, everyone had a hard head in their minds that it could work'. He also received the Sport Innovation Award 2010 for his design.
'Everything cuts both ways.... especially the European sword'
The sword captures the imagination: despite the violent nature of its use, it also evokes an atmosphere of nostalgia and even romance. Equally contradictory are the characteristics of the sword. How does a designer bring together requirements that seem mutually exclusive without becoming a grand concession? The sword is the focus of this lecture. It is explained that it is an out-of-print technological instrument, and how a changing context (of sport) again introduced new fields of tension
