Description

The meeting will be held at the Materia Inspiration Centre in Amsterdam at the invitation of Materia as part of the Xpert series Care.

About the Xpert series Care
The chilly, white and sterile hospitals of the past are thankfully gone. Since research has shown that natural materials, calm colours, plenty of daylight and greenery not only make for a pleasant working environment, but also have a positive effect on the healing process, healthcare has become all about the healing environment.
An exhibition is linked to the series of meetings. This allows people to physically get to know various materials. For instance, antibacterial, self-cleaning and air-purifying materials create healthy environments that can also save dozens of percent in maintenance and management. Besides Materia's own collection, materials from theme partners will also be on display.

Programme 'The Experience of Materials in Care'
In line with the objectives of the MaterialDesign Foundation, the experience of materials in care will be addressed from various angles on 16 May. These perspectives are functionality, aesthetics and psychology. Of note is the observation that when people talk about materials, they are actually talking about décor. "See What You Get" is an outdated concept when it comes to materials. Often it is not about the materials themselves but about their image, which can also be realised in other ways. For example, laminate with a wood motif. In other cases, this is not possible, especially when it comes to tactile perception. The tactile perception of cotton is difficult to imitate with other materials.

Monthly Xpert themes from Materia
The activities of Materia, the innovation network around the most innovative materials, revolve around a topical theme every three months. For visitors to the Materia Inspiration Centre and the events linked to the programme, this offers an opportunity to delve deeply into a subject.
Each theme is filled with lectures, excursions, seminars and other events for architects, interior designers and clients. Naturally, there will always be an exhibition of innovative materials and attention will also be paid to sustainability, renovation, co-creation and technology.
The theme will be filled in with events organised by Materia and events taken up by our media partners and organisations such as the BNA,BNI, KIIVI NIRIA and the MaterialDesign Foundation.
The themes for 2013 are The making of, Care, Leisure and Working

As introducers to the traditional discussion at "the experience of...", two speakers who approach the issue from two angles, namely that of industrial design and that of communication, have been chosen.
Marieke Sonneveld is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Industrial Design and has conducted research in the field of tactile perception of materials, as well as in the field of care. Her previous appearance for MaterialDesign was so successful that we have asked her to share her thoughts with us once again.
Joost Verhoeven conducted research at the University of Twente on the influence of interiors on patients' perception of care and on healing processes.
Joost is now working at the University of Amsterdam, but is happy to present the spectacular results.
Els Zijlstra, director of Materia, will introduce the Materia Inspiration Centre to you
