Description

KIVI NIRIA Division for Water Management is organising the meeting: "Engineers in the water board, a must!" on 10 November 2008. KIVI NIRIA believes that more engineers should be represented in water boards. Knowledge and expertise is thus brought directly into the political debate; an important added value in course-setting and decision-making.

The water board elections take place from 13 - 25 November 2008. Residents within the management area then elect the majority of the members for the general board of the water board in question. This board is elected for four years and determines and monitors policy and the work to be carried out. The dyke or water governor, appointed by the Crown, chairs the General Board. The General Board elects the Executive Board from among them. The website listed below provides further explanation.

Water board elections involve voting for groups or parties. For instance, several political parties have submitted a 'list' in almost every water board. This includes the Algemene Waterschapspartij and Water Natuurlijk - independent of political parties. It is possible to cast a preferential vote for a person.
Parties and organisations themselves have decided who is the list leader and which people are on the lists. It is left up to engineers themselves to put themselves on an elective list via such a list.
The nationally presenting parties are invited to explain on 10 November the importance they attach to the presence of engineers in the water board. Speakers and the discussion will focus on usefulness and necessity.

To prepare the discussion properly from KIVI NIRIA's perspective, a member survey will be organised beforehand. Click on survey (follow link below) to fill it in
