During this excursion, we look at how sustainable water management techniques were applied in the renovation of the Klimaatplein at Saxion in Enschede. Where the square previously consisted of 3600m2 of paved stones, it is now just 2000m2. The number of trees has increased and the number of seats has increased. The shade and greenery provide a cooling effect on the square in hot weather. These changes contribute to a higher liveability and biodiversity on the climate square: A more pleasant place for our students and staff. The Saxion climate square is not just a meeting place; it is a cleverly designed water management solution. The use of Raingardens prevents clean rainwater from entering the sewers unnecessarily.
We also pass by the Trendy Water Centre, water is sustainably purified. The next step is to even upgrade it to drinking water quality. This is all possible at the TRENDY Water Centre where research is being done on this. Ultimately with the aim of relieving the central drinking water and sewage system.
