Description

On 1 February 2013, it will be 60 years since Zeeland, South Holland, West Brabant and also Texel were hit by the water. Reason for KIVI NIRIA and the Watersnoodmuseum to jointly organise a series of nine lectures in the run-up to the commemoration on 1 February. From Thursday 29 November to 31 January, with the exception of 27 December, there will be an interesting lecture every Thursday afternoon at the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk.

Flood risks in the Netherlands and experiences with foreign floods.
The Netherlands is the best protected delta in the world. But how safe are we in our country? New knowledge provides insight into the strength of and weaknesses in our dykes and the damage and casualties caused by floods. This knowledge is partly gained from observations of floods abroad. The lecture will consider the experiences of floods in New Orleans, Thailand, Japan and recently New York and what we in the Netherlands can learn from these events.

Prof Bas Jonkman was appointed professor of hydraulic engineering at TU Delft on 1 October 2012. There, he is responsible for teaching and research in the field of flood risks and hydraulic structures. After studying civil engineering in Delft, he worked at Rijkswaterstaat and Royal Haskoning. In the year 2007, he completed a doctoral thesis on better mapping of flood risks and likelihood of fatalities. He has been involved in various studies and projects in the Netherlands and abroad (including New Orleans, California, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia).
