Description

The KIVI Departments of Biomedical Technology (BMT) and Region North are organising this joint activity which will discuss both the physical background of proton therapy and its medical applications and the construction of the treatment centre. Our host is Dr Bart Vanhauten, radiotherapist and team leader at the UMCG.

The building of the Proton Therapy Centre at the UMCG in Groningen is nearing completion and will be opened this autumn. Even before the opening, there will be an opportunity for KIVI members to visit the Centre.

The programme will consist of a presentation on proton therapy by Dr Bart Vanhouten, followed by a tour of the building.
Radiation with proton beams is a relatively new treatment method for tumours that will also become available to patients in the Netherlands in the course of 2017. The UMCG in Groningen is one of the first hospitals in the Netherlands to start offering treatment with protons in addition to traditional photon irradiation. Construction began in 2015 and the first patients will be treated at the end of 2017.

Proton therapy is a form of radiotherapy in which the dose of radiation can be administered more precisely, resulting in less radiation entering normal tissues. This reduces the risk of side effects from radiation.

The programme starts at 4pm and lasts until 5.30pm. Gather at 16.00 at the main entrance of the proton centre.

The Proton Therapy Centre of the UMCG in Groningen is located at the corner of the S.S. Rosensteinlaan and the Vrydemalaan. It is best to park in the UMCG-Noord car park on Vrydemalaan, almost next to the treatment centre.
