Lashing@Sea Joint Industry project
Description
Western economy depends heavily on sea transport. The applied technology is shaped over time by the balance / dilemma between cost efficiency and safety. Ship dimensions have soared for the benefits of economy of scale. In the meantime there are yearly reports of cargo being damaged, lost to sea, floating in the waterways, washing up on shores or ending up in vulnerable marine habitats. How much is that? Are there systematic flaws in technology? Can improvements be recommended?
MARIN initiated the research initiative "Lashing@Sea" to address the above. With a consortium of 24 partners the work was performed from 2006 to 2009. Presentation will cover the outline and findings of the project.
