Functional Safety for Oil & Gas
Description
The Functional Safety community occupies itself with the execution of safety-critical control algorithms using electronic and mechanical devices. One industry stands out in both the need for, and application of, functional safety systems: the upstream oil & gas industry. The combination of explosive fluids, extreme climates, hostile environments and massive investment has driven the development of a number of systems specifically for oil & gas production. This lecture will use a HIPPS (high integrity pressure protection system) as an example to demonstrate some of the functional safety principles and associated calculations.
