KIVI subject department MRB visiting Chemelot in Geleen

On 15 September, the KIVI department of Measurement, Control and Operation Technology visited Chemelot Geleen.

Since Chemelot is the largest chemical production site in the Netherlands and safety is naturally a major concern within the chemical industry, a bus was hired to drive the group around the 900-hectare site. It started with a visit to SABIC.

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) is one of the largest petrochemical companies in the world. Its European headquarters is in Sittard. One of its production sites is on the Chemelot site. SABIC's activities were explained and a visit was made to the control room of Olefins 4. At the immense model of the plant, the different process steps were explained. The modern and large control room also reflected that this is a very complex plant, there are multiple operating desks and operators.

After lunch in SABIC's restaurant, it continued by bus to Chemelot North. There they visited the Sitech Asset Health Center and OCI Nitrogen's control room.

In the Asset Health Center, measurement data from plant installations are monitored, with the aim of analysing trends that provide information about the condition of those installations. That information enables Sitech Services to take action even before anything can break down in the plant. This allows them to optimise plant maintenance for their customers. The idea is to eventually make plant maintenance 100% predictable.

Two plants are monitored from OCI Nitrogen's control room, namely the Urea plant and the Melamine plant. Urea is used as fertiliser and as feed for the Melamine plant. Again, the plant is operated by multiple operators.

The day ended with a discussion on: the difference in control rooms of Olefins 4 and those of OCI Nitrogen, the feasibility of fully predicting maintenance and Cybersecurity.
