Description

Especially for all KIVI NIRIA members: 'Werfmuseum 't Kromhout' in Amsterdam will open its doors on Sunday 11 December 2011.

Our host, Gerard, invites you, your partner, children and grandchildren to experience the atmosphere of this historic location during a guided tour. All the engines, which have brought this yard so much fame, will be put into operation during the tour.

Youngsters can be introduced to the world of engineering in a unique way. This experience will boost their design and research skills and provide necessary information for their education/career choice. They will be introduced to the variety that engineering can offer them; the input of (grand)parents is an important link in this process.

The festive and informative event for the whole family will be enlivened by the KIVI NIRIA canal cruise through the Amsterdam canals.

A short introduction about the shipyard and its engines.

The museum is located on the original site where Daniël Goedkoop started the shipyard 't Kromhout in the 18th century. For years, wooden sailing ships were made here. That is also where the name 'Kromhout' comes from: it is the 'crooked wood' that is ideally suited for making a ship's hull.

After a difficult start, the 12 hp marine engine was presented at the 1905 exhibition in the RAI.

This was the beginning of a series of famous Kromhout Marine engines.
