Meeting: The New Way of Working on 3 March 2011
It was an interesting, interactive and informal meeting in which ideas and opinions on this way of working were discussed and highlighted.
The meeting took place at Arcadis in Amersfoort, where the building has been adapted in various places for Smart Working. After an introduction by Loeke Richter, the audience could see how Arcadis had implemented telephone booths, concentration areas, meeting and consultation places.
Lidewij de Haas, divisional director at Arcadis, spoke in an inspiring way about her experiences with the New World of Work and how she implements this as a manager. Besides individual freedom and flexibility, it is important as a manager to trust in the professionalism of your employees and to steer for results. Arcadis' project-based way of working suits this, making results measurable and visible. Video conferencing and fixed consultation times ensure the necessary regular contact and consultation. Lidewij is an absolute advocate of this way of working: it gives people accountability and that stimulates!
In a number of short sessions, the definition of the New Way of Working, with its advantages and disadvantages, was sharpened on the basis of a number of stimulating propositions and questions.
It was striking that the work/life balance was seen as both a benefit and a risk. After all, you can choose to work in the most effective way for you and e.g. avoid traffic jams. However, the clear boundary between home and work is also disappearing; after all, home also becomes a workplace.
Important conditions and starting points for the state of mind for the New Way of Working were: taking responsibility but also giving, calling each other to account and also calling each other to account; giving and receiving trust.
The meeting was concluded with a good deal of after-dinner chatting while enjoying a pleasant meal.
