Nuclear power in the Netherlands: 4 scenarios
Description
The Netherlands Nuclear Society, KIVI NIRIA nuclear engineering and the Dutch Young Generation invite you to a symposium on "Nuclear Energy in the Netherlands". The symposium will take place on 25 June at the Nieuwspoort press centre between 13.00 and 17.00.
On 29 April 2010, Ministers Van der Hoeven of Economic Affairs and Huizinga of VROM sent the elaboration of four nuclear energy scenarios to the Lower House. The letter is neutral and makes no choices. It is obvious that a next cabinet will.
With the letter, ministers Van der Hoeven and Huizinga are fulfilling a commitment made in the 2008 Energy Report. It concerns the following scenarios:
1. No new nuclear power plants. In this scenario, no action is taken to realise the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the Netherlands in due course. The Borssele nuclear power plant closes no later than 2033.
2. No new nuclear power plants unless inherently safe. An inherently safe nuclear power plant is not expected to be on the market before 2030 and therefore cannot be operational in the Netherlands before 2040.
3. Replace the Borssele nuclear power plant in 2033. Borssele will be at the end of its technical and economic lifetime that year.
4. New nuclear power plant(s) after 2020 (in addition to replacing Borssele). In this scenario, one or more nuclear power plants will be built in the Netherlands from 2020
