Visit to the former "Dodewaard Nuclear Power Plant" - option 1
KIVI Nuclear Technology and NNS visit the former "Dodewaard Nuclear Power Plant".
When: 19 AND 26 June 2024 (note: these are two of the same activities)
The Dodewaard Nuclear Power Plant had a capacity of 50 MWe and operated from 26 March 1969 to 26 March 1997. In 2003, the last nuclear fuel was removed from the plant and in 2005 the conversion process to so-called "safe containment" was completed. The plant was dried and the buildings were bricked up except for a few doors.
This safe containment is allowed to remain for 40 years. During that period, the radioactivity of short-lived isotopes decreases substantially. All isotopes with half-lives of 4 years or less will have almost completely disappeared by then, and all isotopes with half-lives of 40 years or less will have at least halved in radioactivity. Decommissioning must begin before 1 July 2045 (maximum 40 years after completion of safe containment). During this waiting period, the nuclear plant is safely contained and secured. The plant's operations now consist of maintaining the security systems, ventilation systems and maintenance of the buildings and grounds.
After 2045, the entire complex will be demolished and the site will once again become part of the meadows in the floodplain.
The programme for this meeting is as follows:
11:30h Lunch at Restaurant de Engel, Waalbandijk 102 in Dodewaard
Approx 12:45h Departure to the KCD, Waalbandijk 112a in Dodewaard
13:00h Sign in at the gate as a group
Approx 13:30h Coffee and presentation in former control room about the KCD
Approx 14:30h Tour of the buildings including the contaminated zone
Approx 16:30h After-dinner discussion
17:00h End
Note: Two dates have been scheduled, for both days a maximum group size of 20 people applies. If you want to participate, please register as soon as possible via the KIVI website.
For participation, identification with a passport, NL driving licence or ID card is required. The document number should be mentioned at registration, as we have to send the list of participants to KCD in advance. If you have registered but unfortunately cannot attend, please cancel in time so that we can make a member on the waiting list happy.
Please note: There are no working lifts in the building, and there is frequent climbing of stairs (to the control room is a 9-metre staircase and to the fuel exchange floor is a 23-metre staircase). Support equipment (walker, cane, etc.) cannot be brought inside.
