Deep Sea Mining
Description
Lecture evening on the subject: Deep Sea Mining.
Jules Verne not only wrote great stories, but was clearly a man with a vision. More than 140 years ago, he came to the conclusion that the deep sea must harbour large quantities of precious materials. Jules Verne was also a man who was not overly concerned with banal details of a deep-sea mining installation. He left that to engineers of the future.
Now 140 years later, increasing prosperity and the growth of the world's population have made resources increasingly scarce and expensive. As this process progresses, a new form of mining is coming into view - underwater mining. The reserves available in the oceans are vast and diverse. A new world is opening up underwater that is fascinating in terms of natural phenomena but also offers unprecedented challenges for engineers. Where offshore oil and gas extraction is already mature, Deep Sea Mining may be the 'new frontier' where frontrunners have a chance to gain a strategic lead. Dutch and Belgian dredgers, shipyards, engineering firms and knowledge institutions hold good cards to take advantage of this.
The first lecture will cover the main categories of deposits in deep water and discuss the various challenges, environmental aspects and opportunities for business. The second lecture deals with the possible technical realisation
