Lecture evening on the topic: From SPM and FPSO to Tidal Farms.
Electrical power generation from tidal currents provides a new, green and very predictable source of electricity. It offers low risk and zero emission electricity generation. While most tidal developers concentrate on the development of turbines, leading Dutch offshore energy company Bluewater Energy Services BV has developed an innovative solution to economically install and maintain these turbines in the ocean. This solution is called BlueTEC (TEC= Tidal Energy Converter) and it is based on low cost offshore installation and maintenance, bringing down the total costs of offshore tidal power significantly. Bluewater utilised its core engineering skills in mooring technology and its expertise in marine design, installation and operations & maintenance to develop the BlueTEC platform. The resulting platform is a unified floating structure which is suitable to support any type of turbines in any water depth. For more information upfront, see www.bluewater.com/bluetec.
The presentation will address design aspects of the platform as well as economic impact of design decisions.
Bluewater is currently developing a full scale 1MW demonstration unit that will be installed at the Orkney islands, Scotland. BlueTEC units can be commercially deployed in small quantities for power generation at remote locations, and in large farm configurations for example of 100-200 MW in areas with strong tidal resources
