The sacred in a techno culture
Description
Open Expert Seminar: The Sacred in a techno-culture
Science and technology have unmoored our world. Nevertheless, they figure in countless stories, expectations and imaginings that deal with an uncontrollable, fascinating and terrifying reality that Rudolf Otto called 'the Sacred': the awe-inspiring scale of the cosmos, the end of man in post- or transhumanism, the end of humanity through climate change presented as apocalyptic, etc. Such things place us face to face with a colossal reality that is fascinating, terrifying and uncontrollable. Is perhaps behind the explicit attempt to technically control reality a fascination with the uncontrollable?
The seminar will explore various forms in which the sacred appears in today's techno-culture.
The seminar will be organised by René Munnik in Utrecht (Ariënsinstituut, Keistraat 9). Acting as experts will be Erik Borgman, Stef Aupers, Ciano Aydin, Jonne Hoek, Taede Smedes and Frank Bosman, among others.
