Description

This activity is organised by the Political and Technical Debate Preparation Committee and the Environmental Engineering/Food and Green Department.

As a society, we have set high sustainability targets. Yet you see that good environmental innovations sometimes do not get a chance to prove themselves in the market. While this is essential to achieve our goals. Environmental interest is not the main interest of the free market. This must change, but a guiding role of the government is also essential. We would like to debate with you how we can get environmental innovations into the market better. What can the government do about it and what can we (technicians, private individuals, financiers, etc.) do about it.

Freek Sander, co-owner of Plugwise, will give an introduction in which he takes us through the process of getting an environmental innovation onto the market. What did he encounter, what helped him and what did not. What are the opportunities for improvement. After the entrepreneur, Liesbeth Spies, Lower House (CDA), will briefly share her views on these issues and how politicians deal with them. Investor Peter van Gelderen, partner at Icos Capital, will also give his opinion on the playing field.

Afterwards, under the leadership of the chairman of the day Jan Peter van den Toren, secretary Innovation Platform, we will debate with the audience on a number of propositions.
- The introduction of environmental innovations should be left to the market. It determines which techniques are successful.
- Rather stringent legislation than subsidies and financing constructions.
- Government funding is better than private funding.
- Consistent government policy gives market introduction a longer horizon.
