Presentations wind turbine technology by Eize de Vries (cancelled due to coronavirus)
The scheduled activity of 7 April 2020 is suspended until further notice due to the Corona crisis. However, it is planned to continue this activity later in 2020. You can continue to sign up. We will inform in due course when a new date has been chosen.
Description and context
The use of fossil fuels creates emissions ofCO2, causing global warming and changing our climate. To counter this, the Netherlands is switching in phases to clean low-carbon energy from wind, solar, biomass and geothermal energy. This transition includes the expansion of wind farms mainly on the Dutch part of the North Sea.
In early 2018, the board of KIVI's Sustainable Technology department drew up a multi-year programme of presentations and company visits related to wind energy. The programme runs from 2018 to 2022. During this period, DT organises 10 meetings.
The common thread of DT's multi-annual wind energy programme consists of the development, design, engineering, construction, commissioning and operation of wind turbines in wind farms. We also want to follow and share with KIVI members the technical, economic, social and political developments related to the application of wind energy. Two meetings are planned annually.
This meeting deals with the (technical) developments and the calculations needed to dimension, build and scale up wind turbines. Mr Eize de Vries will provide presentations in these 2. See programme.
About the speaker Mr Eize de Vries
Founder and owner of Rotation Consultancy in Amersfoort since 1996. The two main activities are 1) Technical Consultancy in the field of wind turbine technology and 2) writing technical scientific articles and conducting studies for international clients. Summary Rotation Consultancy & Science Publications. He has put his extensive technical training into practice and years of international experience.
Programme
13:00 - 13:30 Walk-in and reception by André Dijkmans of KIVI Sustainable Technology (DT)
13:30 - 13:45 Chairman KIVI Sustainable Technology about KIVI and DT
13:45 - 15:15 Presentation 1 by Eize de Vries
Overview of 40 years of development of modern wind turbine technology, including key trends. Also discussed are pioneers and experiences with key concepts. Furthermore, some key figures such as the LCA and when scaling up wind turbines. Finally, some indicative yield calculations of wind turbines at different wind and environmental conditions with different turbine configurations (main variables power, rotor area, shaft height) and what the main determinants of yield are.
15:15 - 15:30 Pause
15:30 - 17:00 Presentation 2 by Eize de Vries
The latest and upcoming generations of onshore and offshore turbines, applied technologies, and new turbine and main component concepts as well as key innovations. Also discussed will be the extent to which scaling up can continue with listed and unlisted future technical and non-technical limits. A number of radical concepts will also be explained including the (technical) reasons why most of them did not make it to commercialisation. Finally, an example of a revolutionary climate-positive turbine concept from a German engineering firm.
