What are and what do Rendac Son and Ecoson, part of Darling Ingredients, do?

Rendac Son and Ecoson, both located at the Son site, are part of Darling Ingredients. Darling Ingredients is a US listed company, a world leader in producing high-quality, sustainable ingredients from organic residues for various industries.Darling Ingredients' end products are used as natural ingredients for a wide variety of purposes, such as pharmaceuticals, food, feed, technical applications, fertilisers and bioenergy.

Through various tailor-made services, Rendac Son collects animal carcasses and animal residues within the Netherlands for processing and destruction. In this way, it ensures reduction of animal disease and public health risks. Moreover, they made an important sustainability step, as the end products are used to produce green energy and sustainable fuels.

The current main company of Rendac Son opened on 14 June 1934 under the name N.V. Chemische Bedrijven van de N.C.B. on the Sonse Heide in Son. This company was founded by the NCB and was to process animal material in North Brabant, Limburg and the southern part of Gelderland. In the past, processing cadavers and offal soon caused odour nuisance and water pollution by discharging into the Dommel river. With the ever-increasing development of air and water treatment techniques, an important step could be taken here to minimise nuisance to the surrounding area.

In 2007, operations at the site were expanded to include Ecoson. This activity includes the production of renewable raw materials for biodiesel as well as the production of renewable energy from residual streams from the food industry. In 2014, Ecoson operations were further expanded to include the production of Biophosphate pellets from animal manure. This aims to move from manure surplus problem to the sustainable production of a natural, phosphate-rich organic fertiliser.

Sustainability: a continuous development in the company
