PHS Amsterdam: Clarification civil projects (Oostert access bridges, IJ metro tunnel and Free Crossing Dijksgracht)
PHS Amsterdam
Part of Programma Hoogfrequent Spoorvervoer (PHS) is the adaptation of Amsterdam Centraal and the tracks around the station. This adaptation will give the rail infrastructure around Amsterdam Centraal more capacity, quality and robustness in the coming years.
More capacity and space
Amsterdam Centraal receives around 200,000 passengers a day on average, and many times more during events. We expect the number of passengers using the station daily to rise to over a quarter of a million by 2030.
Besides growth in passenger transport, we also expect an increase in freight transport. As a result, even more trains will use the tracks at and around Amsterdam Central Station in the future.
Complex rebuilding
The rebuilding will take place in phases, because trains must be able to continue running and travellers must be able to use the station safely. This will take some lead time, probably around seven to eight years. It is a complex job, costing an estimated €850 million, including replacement works.
