Description

ASML is the world's largest producer of computer chip production machines. Chips are not only in computers but also in many other products such as phones, cameras and cars. ASML builds machines to expose wafers, disks of silicon, 300 mm in diameter, on which switching elements are printed in many layers. The design of the chip is supplied by chip manufacturers. A lot of optics are involved, supplied by Zeiss. A new development is enlarging the wafer to 450 millimetres. Frank Bornebroek tells us what is involved before a machine is designed and made.
