Electronic nosing...
Description
Gerhard Remmers tells us about the difference between our own nose and the electronic variety.
An electronic nose is an analytical instrument which basically consists of a combination of a series of chemical sensors and pattern recognition software. An electronic nose is able to recognise simple or complex mixtures of organic vapours after an appropriate training period. The system can be used for rapid quality control in the food and chemical industries. Environmental, safety and medical applications are also among the possibilities.
As in humans, a smell can be learned and recognised. For example, an electronic nose can immediately detect deviations from a " standard smell" during a process
