NETWORK CAFÉ: Nuclear power of the future, Thorium

Wednesday 14 October 2020(original dates 6 April and 8 June, rescheduled due to coronavirus).

Thorium has recently been frequently mentioned as an alternative fuel for nuclear power plants. Using thorium instead of uranium would solve the major problems surrounding nuclear power in one fell swoop. The main arguments cited in this regard:

  • In a thorium-fuelled nuclear power plant, a nuclear disaster is out of the question.
  • A thorium power plant does not produce plutonium with which you can then make nuclear weapons
  • Hardly any radioactive waste is created.
  • Thorium is practically infinitely available, e.g. in sand
