Description

An enjoyable meeting day for region Gelderland members and their partners at the Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem.

In 1912, a number of 'concerned' individuals established an open air museum in Arnhem. They saw that due to increasing industrialisation and urbanisation, a great wealth of Dutch traditions and regional diversity was in danger of being lost. The founders leased the De Waterberg estate from the municipality of Arnhem. Some six buildings were transferred to the site and so the Netherlands Open Air Museum opened its gates on 13 July 1918. In 1941, the Open Air Museum became 'Rijksmuseum voor Volkskunde', after which several difficult war years would follow.

Since 1 January 1991, the foundation 'Het Nederlands Openluchtmuseum' has been responsible for its continued existence. However, the buildings and objects remained the property of the State. For management and maintenance, the foundation receives an annual contribution from the State: the museum itself is responsible for exploitation.

The Dutch Open Air Museum is a national museum about the culture of everyday life of ordinary people
