NETWORKCAFÉ: RENOVATION WAAL BRIDGE

The Waalbrug in Nijmegen is crucial for good accessibility. Renovation of the 80-year-old Waalbrug was necessary to keep traffic flowing smoothly and safely across the bridge in the future. Rijkswaterstaat owns the bridge and is responsible for the maintenance work. As road manager, the municipality of Nijmegen is responsible for road traffic over the bridge.

During the renovation, contractor KWS (Koninklijke VolkerWessels) replaced the concrete deck and painted the steel structure, among other things. In addition, on behalf of Nijmegen local authority, the bus lane was converted into a two-sided cycle path. The design of the burg was returned to its original state as much as possible.
