Room for the River
Description
Anyone who took a drive along the river IJssel last year will undoubtedly have seen the enormous amount of work currently being done there. This work, such as dike relocation and floodplain excavation, is part of the Room for the River programme. Increasing amounts of rain and meltwater and decreasing space for water to pass through caused considerable damage and inconvenience in 1993 and 1995.
The programme not only means an investment in safety, but should also make the river area more beautiful and attractive with space for nature and recreation. Engineering firm Witteveen and Bos is acting as advisor during implementation and can therefore tell us all about it.
