Oranjestad Buren-The pearl of the Betuwe
Description
Buren is a town with a rich history and many places of interest. The municipality of Buren is formed by fourteen cores. Located in the beautiful Rivierengebied. Buren has a lot to offer its visitors. It is impossible to see all the beauty in one day.
The town of Buren was granted city rights in 1395. A lot has happened since then. There have been redivisions, making the municipality what it is today.
Oranjestad
Buren may call itself Oranjestad, because of its connection with the royal family. William of Orange married Anna van Buren there in 1551. Princess Beatrix and King Willem-Alexander are therefore countess and count of Buren.
Castle of Buren
Buren had a castle, where the marriage between William of Orange and Anna van Egmond, countess of Buren, took place on 8 July 1551. From the marriage two children were born, Philip William (1555) and Maria (1556).
Anna died in 1558. The children were still very young, yet Philips Willem, under the tutelage of his father, became Count of Buren.
The further life of Philips Willem is a history, about which not much has been spoken here. He was kidnapped, raised Roman Catholic in Spain later lived in Diest (Belgium) where he is buried in the great St Sulpitius church. This explains the links with the Orange city of Diest. Dillenburg (Germany) is the birthplace of William of Orange.
